Quite a varied month, as spring months usually are.
Notable events included a thunderstorm on the evening of the 2nd,
which dropped 9mm of rain, a very wet 24 hours leading up to 0900 on the 19th,
with 29mm of rain recorded, a high of 20.9C (69.6F) on the 25th, and
a minimum of –0.3C (31.5F) on the 9th, unusually the only day of air
frost this month.
According to the Durham 1971-2000 averages, which are
representative for this area, you would expect 4.3 days of air frost, compared
to this months one solitary day. It was a wetter than average April with 73mm
of rain and 12 days of rain >1mm recorded. Quite a bit higher than the
1971-2000 average which is 52mm of rain and 9.7 days rain >1mm. Once again
it has been milder than average, a mean temperature of 9.3C, which is 2.1C
above the average of 7.2C. Again, as seems to be the theme for this year so
far, the high mean temperature had a great deal to do with the high night time
minimum temperatures, running out at 6.0C this month, well above the average of
3.3C. Daytime maximums averaged 12.6C, which is 1.3C above the expected 11.3C.
In summary, a very mild and wet month, perfect growing
weather for the vegetation. In fact, this month could have been exceptional for
April, had it not been for the cold, dull last 4 days of the month.
