Sheltered from the prevailing South Westerly winds by the Pennines, and only 15 miles from the North Sea coast, the climate is temperate, and fairly dry. Extremes of heat and cold are rare, and although Newton Aycliffe is not a wet location, rainfall is common in every month, though rarely heavy.
The Weather Station that is used for this site is an Oregon Scientific wm-918 Automatic Weather Station (AWS), and the software that records all the data is virtual weather station. The station is also set up to upload data to the internet every 10 minutes, so real time conditions can always be accessed.
