Sometimes stormy in the first two weeks with damaging gales on the 8th, but overall quite settled with low rainfall. There was only 3 days below 0ºC in the entire month, with only 3 days of lying snow. Very poor for winter lovers.
The mean temperature of 5.7ºC was 2.3ºC warmer than the Durham 1971-2000 average. This is very substantial and follows the recent trend of very mild winter months in the past decade. It was 1.2ºC warmer than January 2004, itself a mild month. The top temperature reached 13.4ºC, warmer than any January day in 2004, whilst the lowest temperature was –1.4ºC, not very cold at all for January.
There was 12 rain days >1mm, about the average, but the total rainfall of 27mm, was only 50% of the Durham 1971-2000 average. This is the 3rd month in a row with less than 50% average rainfall.
To summarise, a rather exceptional month, very mild, with hardly any frost or snow, and low rainfall.
