MONTHLY SUMMARY
 
January 2010 was the coldest month recorded at this station, with a mean temperature of just 1.6ºc,
nearly 2 degrees colder than the 71-00 Durham mean. A similar departure from the average to December 
2009. So two coldest months recorded in a row. The coldest temperature was broken again with a 
reading of -7.1º, and the warmest day of this month peaked at only 9.1º, the coldest maximum I have
recorded in any January. Just like December, January 2010 saw plentiful snow cover with the first 15
days seeing the ground covered in snow. This of course was a follow up to the December snow, where 
the last 15 days had snow cover. Overall there was 30 consecutive days of snow cover from 17th December
2009 to 15th January 2010, a rare occurrence indeed.
