After recent warm summers, this month was a bit of a
disappointment. Following on from the miserable second half of June, the first
half of July was very cool, dull and wet with a maximum temperature of just
12.6ºC on the 8th. In some parts of the UK, the 8th saw
their coldest ever July maximum temperature.
The second half of the month was drier, brighter, more
settled, and progressively warmer, with 11 out of only12 days recording over
20ºC in July happening in the second half. The highest temperature of the month
was on the 29th with 25.8ºC (78.4ºF).
Overall, temperature wise the average maximum was 19ºC,
around 1ºC below the 1971-2000 Durham norm. The night-time minimum was 11.6ºC,
around 1ºC above average. The mean temperature worked out at 15.3ºC, which is
exactly the 1971-2000 Durham average.
Rainfall of 1mm or above fell on 13 days during the month.
Normally you would expect to see 8.4 days with rain >1mm. The total rainfall
for the month was 61mm, which is above the 1971-2000 Durham average of 44mm.
So in summary, this is the first month of 2004 to have a
mean temperature not above the monthly average, with daytime maximums being
below average. And it was a duller and wetter July than one would normally
expect.
