Review of May 2004
A very nice Spring month. May 2004 saw the temperature exceed 18ºC on 12 days, and it exceeded 20ºC on 4 days. Rainfall was very low, only 20mm recorded in the month, with 7 days of measurable rainfall >1mm. This is much drier than the Durham 1971-2000 average of 49.5mm rain and 9.3 rain days >1mm. The mean temperature of 11.8ºC was significantly higher than the Durham 1971-2000 average of 10.1ºC. That’s a difference of 1.7ºC, and means that every month in 2004 has been warmer than average. Although this station has no sunshine measuring equipment, another local station indicates that this month has been sunnier than average. Notable events this month include a high of 22.7ºC on 16th May, and a heavy afternoon shower on 20th May which produced 10mm rain out of 11mm recorded at 0900 21st May. That shower actually produced half of the entire month’s rainfall, such was the dryness of the month.
To summarise, much warmer and drier than an average May,
with higher than average sunshine.
